The diary extract below is from a Japanese medical officer named Dr Paul Nebu Tatsuqushi, who wrote his final entry on 29th May 1943 before his death during the battle of Attu island.

The Battle of Attu Island is part of the Aleutian Islands Campaign during the Pacific War from 11th to 30th May 1943 after its seizure by Japanese forces on 7th June 1942. Out of the 2500 Japanese defenders that held against the US counteroffensive to retake the island, only 29 survived.

This entry here expresses not only the tragedy of the situation but the sheer willingness of the Japanese soldier to give his life in honour of the bushido code, a samurai warrior belief that surrender is dishonorable and that facing death represents honour, courage, and dignity of the Japanese spirit.

The Aleutian Islands Campaign is the only time in WW2 when a opposing nation landed on American soil.
